India put up a total of 176 runs in 20 overs thanks to Virat Kohli’s 76-run knock and managed to defend the score by limiting the Proteas to 169/8 in the second innings.
Virat Kohli stood tall for the Indians as he top-scored with 76 runs and was aided by Axar Patel’s 47 off 31 deliveries. Shivam Dube chipped in with 27 runs as India posted the highest total in a T20 World Cup final.
Indians were put through testing moments in the second innings as it seemed as though at one point David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen would take the game away from the men in blue as they belted the spinners left, right and centre.
But, strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah turned the tide of the game with his ever-economical spell and also managed to claim 2 crucial wickets to lead the Indians to the title.
Hardik Pandya, Rohit, and Mohammed Siraj were just some of the few players in blue who teared up in joy following the final delivery as India reached the pinnacle of T20 cricket after 17 long years.
It was also India’s first World Cup in 13 years, and their first ICC trophy after an excruciating wait of 11 years.
Head coach Rahul Dravid, who announced that he would step down from his role at the helm of the team, was presented a fitting farewell by the boys in blue as they etched their name in the history books.
