Third time’s the charm: is it not what they say? Well, it sure took three Herculean efforts with the bat for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to power his team through to a historic nail-biter of a victory as India faced Afghanistan in their third and final T20I on Wednesday.
The encounter was not devoid of drama whatsoever and one eye-catching moment arose when the team faced off in the first Super Over.
Afghanistan were up to bat first and set the target, as Gulbadin Naib and veteran Mohammad Nabi tool to the crease to face off against India’s Mukesh Kumar.
The Super Over started off in exciting fashion as Naib was run out off the first ball, forcing Afghanistan to send out Gurbaz, who slashed a four and gave the strike to Nabi, who smacked another maximum to notch up 13 runs in 5 balls for Afghanistan.
With one ball left, Mukesh bowled a wondrous yorker to the offside to bamboozle Nabi, who made a run for it. Sanju Samson attempted to run him out as he threw the ball away from the other end, which got deflected off Nabi’s pads and ran down the ground.
Instead of stopping themselves, the Afghans continued to make the runs tick, as Nabi and Gurbaz ended up snatching three runs off the last ball, laving Indian skipper Rohit Sharma furious.

Rohit walked up to the umpire, livid, and argued that the ball was deflected off his pads and Nabi should not have run for the extra 2 runs in the end.
Rohit’s frustrations did no just end there as he then took to Nabi and exchanged a few words in what can only be termed as a heated exchange.
But regardless, Nabi was still not in the wrong as per the rules and the three runs stood, helping Afghanistan set a target of 17 runs for India.
In the end, it would not matter for Rohit who exacted his revenge with the bat, notching up 22 runs over the two Super Overs and led his Indian side to a historic victory.
Rohit was indubitably the Man of the Match, as he turned a scratchy start into a memorable innings and blazed away to a record-breaking fifty T20I century – the most by any batter in the format’s history. He remained unbeaten on 121 off 69, an innings featuring 11 fours and eight sixes, breaking a flurry of records along the way.
