On This Day In 2016: Sunrisers Hyderabad Beat RCB to Win Their Maiden IPL Title
The Orange Army made their debut in the T20 competition in 2013. They came as a replacement for another Hyderabad-based franchise– the Deccan Chargers which became the champions of the 2009 IPL.

Sunrisers Hyderabad took home their first and only Indian Premier League (IPL) title by beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium eight years back on this day (May 29). The Orange Army made their debut in the T20 competition in 2013. They came as a replacement for another Hyderabad-based franchise– the Deccan Chargers which became the champions of the 2009 IPL.

The team was terminated in 2012 due to long-standing financial issues. Under the captaincy of Kumar Sangakkara, Sunrisers Hyderabad reached the playoffs in their debut season but lost the Eliminator to Rajasthan Royals.

SRH failed to produce anything significant in the next two IPLs before making a roaring comeback in 2016. With David Warner leading from the front, SRH finished third in the points table after notching eight victories in the league stage.

They got the better of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminator, claiming a 22-run win. In the following assignment, SRH had to overcome the now-defunct Gujarat Giants. Warner and Co. registered a four-wicket win in Qualifier 2 to confirm a berth in the final.

It was the season where Virat Kohli became the first batter to breach the 900-run mark in a single IPL. Thanks to his sublime form, Royal Challengers Bengaluru put up a dominant performance in the 2016 IPL. They secured a second-place finish in the league phase before beating the Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 1 to earn the bragging rights.

While Virat Kohli led the Orange Cap charts in the 2016 IPL, SRH captain David Warner was just behind him. The Aussie opener continued his scintillating form in the final. He struck eight boundaries and three sixes to score a blazing 68 off 38 deliveries. The upcoming SRH batters like Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh and Ben Cutting used the foundation well and helped their team post a mammoth 208 runs on the board.

The pit in Bengaluru assisted the batters in the second innings as well. The RCB opening pair of Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle gave the home side a powerful start. RCB had reached 114 when Gayle returned to the pavilion after contributing 76 runs to the scoresheet.

Kohli was sent packing by Barinder Sran at 54 runs a few overs later. Following the dismissals of the openers, no RCB player could shine with the bat. SRH ultimately restricted their opponents to 200 runs to clinch a historic triumph.
