England will face 2023 ODI World Cup winners Australia in a five-match ODI series next month as part of their preparations for the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy. In the 15-member squad announced by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on Monday (August 26) for the home series starting on September 19 in Nottingham, there was no place for star middle-order batter Joe Root along with all-rounder Moeen Ali and wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow. The trio was part of England’s ODI World Cup squad last year.
In the ODI squad, players from the current Test squad—Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Matthew Potts, and Jamie Smith—were included. Josh Hull, who was added to the Test squad on Sunday (August 25) as a replacement for injured Mark Wood, is included alongside uncapped players Jacob Bethell and John Turner.
Jos Buttler will lead the 2019 champions in the five ODIs as well as the three T20Is, which are set to start on September 11 in Southampton.
In the T20I squad, five uncapped players—Essex batter Jordan Cox, Warwickshire pair Jacob Bethell and Dan Mousley, Leicestershire seamer Josh Hull, and Hampshire fast bowler John Turner—were selected by the ECB along with Durham’s Brydon Carse, who returned to the senior squads after completing his three-month suspension from all cricket.
