Former England captain Michael Vaughan pointed the finger at Kane Williamson’s strike rate in the shortest format after New Zealand crashed out of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Vaughan reckoned that Williamson should keep track of Virat Kohli, who has revamped his game quite smoothly in this era of aggressive cricket.
Williamson, known as an all-format specialist, has batted at a strike rate of under 120 in his last 30 T20I innings since January 2021. In this edition of the T20 World Cup, the New Zealand captain featured in all four league games and aggregated 28 runs at a strike rate of almost 88.

Michael Vaughan was not quite impressed with Kane Williamson’s batting at the tournament. Speaking about the topic on Cricbuzz, the cricketer-turned-pundit offered some suggestions about how Williamson could improve his T20I strike rate.
Dragging Virat Kohli into the discussion, Michael Vaughan said, “I don’t think Kane is ever going to be a player that strikes at 200. But look at Virat Kohli in this year’s IPL, he went from Virat in previous years to suddenly Virat Kohli the modern 2024 player by going for it and being expansive, particularly against the spin, found a couple of lap slog shots which was tremendous to see. And maybe Kane needs to have a look at Virat and see if he can up his tempo by around 15%.”
Michael Vaughan, however, felt that Kane Williamson should continue playing the shortest format of the game despite the failure at the T20 World Cup. The Kiwi batter has been inconsistent in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the last two seasons due to injury issues. He has featured in only three IPL matches combining two editions. For New Zealand, he has played only six T20Is since the beginning of the last year.

“I always look at Kane and feel he is the kind of batter that needs to be playing. He needs time in the middle and his rhythm comes and he starts to get that timing. Kane Williamson in the IPL where he is playing 2 or 3 games, don’t think it does anything for his batting,” Michael Vaughan explained.
Under Kane Williamson’s captaincy, New Zealand managed to claim two victories in four group-league matches in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup. The Black Caps finished third in Group C.
