The 17th season of the Indian Premier League will reportedly get underway from March 22 with the final on May 26. However, a final call on the schedule for the upcoming season will only be taken after the announcement of the dates for the General Elections in India.
CricketNext had reported in December last year that IPL will be held entirely in India despite the general elections.
“We had discussions around the IPL schedule and we have no option but to wait for a word from the Home Ministry and Election Commission of India on the polling schedule for General Elections, which is likely to be around the IPL’s time,” a senior BCCI official told this publication.
“There is no question or even thought of moving it out of India. We need to wait for the polling schedule and based on that we will have discussions with regards to security and other arrangements and then take it forward from there on. We are very confident of hosting the entire tournament in India and discussions with all stakeholders will begin soon,” the official added.
As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI has discussed the schedule with the stakeholders and has received assurances from all the cricket boards for the availability of their players for the IPL 2024.
Chennai Super Kings defeated Gujarat Titans in the final last year in Ahmedabad to win a record-equaling fifth IPL title, drawing level with Mumbai Indians.
Last week, the BCCI had announced TATA Group has extended its title sponsorship rights for the next five years. The Indian conglomerate also holds the title sponsorship rights for the Women’s Premier League.
Meanwhile, the BCCI is likely to announce the schedule for the upcoming season of WPL in the next few days. The WPL 2024 will be held across Bengaluru and Delhi this time around between February 22 to March 17 after its inaugural season was held entirely in Mumbai.
Mumbai Indians are the defending WPL champions having beaten Delhi Capitals in the title clash last year.
