Punjab Kings spinner Rahul Chahar marked his entry to the crease at Dharamshala on Sunday with two wickets in his first two deliveries of the day against holders Chennai Super Kings.

The crafty spinner dismissed CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for 32 runs off 21 deliveries as he was caught behind by Jitesh Sharma on Chahar’s opening delivery of the day, before scalping Shivam Dube for a golden duck in the very next ball.

Punjab won the toss and skipper Sam Curran opted to put Chennai to bat first. The holders opened the innings with Ajnkya Rahane and captain Gaikwad, as they have done this season.

Rahane was the first to go as he fell prey to Arshdeep Singh, with Kagiso Rabada picking up the catch of the veteran batter. Daryll Mitchell came in to bat at No.3 and put up a 57-run stand alongside skipper Gaikwad for the second wicket before the captain was sent back to the hut by Chahar’s spin.

Dube fell for his second consecutive duck in as many games since being handed the call-up to the national side for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.

Mitchell, who had added 30 runs off 19 deliveries was dismissed by Harshal Patel as the Kiwi was castled by the Indian bowler. Moeen Ali and Ravindra Jadeja shared the crease for 26 runs thereafter, but the partnership was cut short by Curran, who sent the Englishman Ali back to the dugout as Jonny Bairstow held onto the catch offered up by his compatriot.

Mitchell Santner was the next to go as he fell to Chahar, who was brought back into the attack in the 16th over as the Kiwi went for a run-a-ball 11 innings, as the spinner picked his third victim of the day.
