As many as eight players from India’s 2022 T20 World Cup squad have been retained in the 2024 squad as India will aim to clinch their second T20 World Cup trophy after their maiden win in the inaugural edition in 2007. While Rohit Sharma has been part of every T20 World Cup squad, Virat Kohli in only five T20 WC appearances is the highest run-getter in the tournament’s history. Out of the squad of 15, six players have not played a T20 World Cup game and you will be surprised to know that the spin twins – Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal – are among those six.
Complete List of T20 World Cup 2024 Squads
After 2007, India has had a mixed bag of results in the succeeding editions, managing to make the final only once thereafter – in 2014 – and in the 2022 edition, they were blown away by England in the semi-finals.
As India gears up for another T20 World Cup campaign, here’s a look at how the current squad members have fared in the previous editions of the T20 World Cups they have been part of.
Rohit Sharma (C)
Rohit Sharma has been part of every T20 World Cup to date and is set to appear for the ninth time in the 2024 edition. In the final of the 2007 World Cup, Rohit played a crucial hand of unbeaten 30 off 16 balls, while in the 2014 World Cup in Bangladesh – where India reached the final – he scored 200 runs in 6 matches – finishing as the fourth highest run-getter in the tournament. In the 2022 edition, Sharma – the captain – had an underwhelming tournament scoring just 116 runs in 6 matches, striking at 106.42.
Hardik Pandya (VC)
The 2024 edition will be Hardik Pandya’s fourth T20 World Cup after being part of the previous three – 2016, 2021 and 2022. However, his returns both with the bat and bowl have been meager. In a total of 16 matches, he has managed 213 runs at 23.66 and has taken 13 wickets at 25.30. In the previous edition, he played six games scoring 128 runs, and picked eight wickets at 18.25.
Yashasvi Jaiswal
The 2024 edition will be Yashasvi Jaiswal’s first T20 World Cup appearance, having made his T20I debut only last year.
Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli will be playing his sixth T20 World Cup after making his T20 WC debut in 2012. But despite that, Kohli is the highest run-getter in the tournament’s history and has walked away as the highest run-getter’s tally in two editions – 2014 and 2022. In the last edition, Kohli made 296 runs at 98.66, striking at 136.40. He has hit a whopping 14 fifties in the 27 T20 WC matches he has played.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav will be playing his third T20 World Cup after being part of the Indian squad in 2021 and 2022. 2021 was a rather forgettable one for SKY but in 2022 he made 239 runs, striking at 189.68 with three fifties to his name.
Rishabh Pant (WK)
Part of the 2021 and 2022 World Cup squads Pant’s return has been not to write home about. In 7 matches, he managed to bat only five times facing a combined total of 71 deliveries.
