Virat Kohli on Saturday announced his retirement from T20Is after India thumped South Africa to win the T20 World Cup 2024. The ace Indian batter was adjudged Player of the Match for his 76-run knock, bailing out the men in blue of a precarious collapse in the Powerplay. Kohli bids adieu to the format with 4188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.69. He scored 38 fifties and lone century which came against Afghanistan in September 2022.
Kohli took to his social media accounts to express his delight over India’s terrific second T20 title triumph.
“Couldn’t have dreamt of a better day than this. God is great and I bow my head in gratitude. We finally did it,” the former India skipper wrote.

Kohli walked into T20I sunset after reeling out a classy innings that led India to their second T20 World Cup title, saying that it’s time for the next generation to take over.
“This was my last T20 World Cup and this is exactly what we wanted to achieve. This is an amazing game. I was telling Rohit (Sharma) when we went out to bat, I was like, one day you feel like you can’t get a run and then you come out and then things happen. God is great,” Kohli told host broadcasters after bagging the Player of the Match Award.
“It’s time for the next generation to take over. It’s a two-year cycle (for the next T20 WC), some amazing players’re playing in India,” he added.
Rohit Sharma also retires
The World Cup winning captain also called it quit and announced it while addressing the post-match presser in Barbados.
“This was my last game as well,” the captain said in his post-match press conference, referring to Virat Kohli’s earlier announcement that he will be retiring from T20Is.
“I’ve enjoyed since the time I started playing this format. Better a time to say goodbye to this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted – I wanted to win the cup,” he added.
