Arshdeep Singh played a big role in helping India end the 11-year wait for an ICC trophy last month by finishing as the leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup 2024. The 25-year-old left-arm pacer picked up 17 wickets in eight matches for the Men in Blue and helped them become T20 World Cup winners again after 17 years. After India’s win in the T20 World Cup 2024, Arshdeep expressed his desire to play Test cricket for India.
He has played 16 first-class matches so far and has picked up 49 wickets. During a recent interview with Indian Express, former India head coach Paras Mhambrey was asked about Arshdeep’s chances of playing Test cricket for the Indian team, and he said that it will all depend on the conditions. According to him, while the youngster might get a chance to play in Australia if India opts for a four-man pace attack, it will be difficult for him to find a place in the side during a Test match staged in India.
“It depends on the conditions. Maybe in Australia, if we play four seamers, he has a chance. To get one in India will be very difficult at the moment,” Mhambrey was quoted as saying.
The former India bowling coach feels that Arshdeep needs a little more game time in first-class cricket so that he can get control over his swing and also know how to use the reverse swing.
“I feel he just needs a little more game time in first-class cricket, just to get control over his swing and also know how to use reverse-swing, which will be very handy. He has the swing that works for him. It is about maintaining fitness and working on it. At the moment, he may not be a starter in Tests, but he isn’t far away,” Mhambrey added.
Arshdeep’s record for India
Arshdeep made his T20I debut for India on July 10, 2022, against England in Southampton and has played 52 matches in the shortest format so far, in addition to making six ODI appearances for the Men in Blue. With 79 wickets to his name, the Punjab-based cricketer is the fifth-leading wicket-taker for India in T20Is.
