Afghanistan posted a historic win against Bangladesh to qualify for the T20 World Cup semi-final for the very first time. Chasing a revised target of 114, Bangladesh fell short by eight runs (DLS method). Afghanistan’s epic win resulted in Australia’s elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024.
While Naveen-ul-Haq excelled in the Afghan bowling unit it was skipper Rashid Khan who produced a splendid cameo with the bat to guide his side to a respectable total. Coming down to bat late in the order, Rashid came up with a quickfire 19 (not out) off 10 balls. Rashid’s power-packed knock comprised three sixes. A video of Rashid’s supreme six-hitting prowess was shared by the official Instagram handle of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“Finishing the innings with a flurry,” read the caption of the post shared by ICC on Instagram.

On the final delivery of the 18th over, Rashid walloped a six over the deep midwicket region facing Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed. Rashid’s remaining two maximums came in the final over of the innings. On the second ball of the 20th over, Rashid powered a six over the point region. Rashid capped off Afghanistan’s innings with a powerful short-arm jab to score another solid six off Tanzim Hasan Sakib.
Praising Rashid’s spectacular knock, one Instagram user branded the Afghanistan skipper as a “gem.”
Another person, quite optimistically, predicted that the T20 World Cup 2024 final match will witness “Afghanistan vs India.”
One user asked, “Why he is coming this much late to the crease? He has higher hitting potential than other Afghanistan players.”
Another person felt that Rashid was “Better than top order batsman [in] any other’s team.”
One Instagram user believed that Rashid “deserves the semis and maybe finals.”
Defending a total of 115, Afghanistan captain Rashid had to deal with three rain-enforced stoppages and a revised target of 114 off 19 overs. The target, eventually, proved to be too much for Bangladesh who were bowled out for 105. Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq picked up four wickets each for their side. In the semi-finals, Afghanistan will be up against South Africa on Thursday, June 27.
