4 Players Who Can Benefit From IPL's New Uncapped Player Rule Ahead of 2025 Auction
The new rule of capped veteran players being categorised as uncapped has set the tournament alight with several veterans being deemed eligible to be retained at a lower price. Take a look at some of the players that could benefit from this.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council have released the mandate regarding the rules regarding retentions and their new policies ahead of the 2025 IPL mega-auction. Among the notable changes brought to the tournament is the uncapped player rule which now applies to the veteran group of Indian players.

According to the official release, a capped Indian player will become uncapped, if the player has in the last five calendar years preceding the year in which the relevant Season is held, not played in the starting XI in International Cricket (Test match, ODI, Twenty20 International) or does not have a Central Contract with BCCI. This will apply to Indian Players only.

Now let us take a look at some of the players that could benefit from the uncapped player rule.

Piyush Chawla – Mumbai Indians (MI)

The veteran Indian spinner has been a part of the IPL since the inaugural edition back in 2008. He last played an international game back in December 2012 and would be eligible to be retained as an uncapped player. But the Mumbai Indians have bigger talent to think about and retaining the services of Chawla could be low on their list of priorities.

Mohit Sharma – Gujarat Titans (GT)

The former CSK-pacer who has found a new home in Gujarat Titans seems to have found his form with the ball once again. He played a crucial part in their title-winning campaign back in 2022. His last international game was in 2015 which makes him eligible to be retained as an uncapped player, but the Titans could look at the likes of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharshan, Rashid Khan and David Miller first before they think of retaining the veteran quick bowler.

Sandeep Sharma – Rajasthan Royals (RR)

The specialist fast-bowler for the Rajasthan Royals has proven to be a reliable option for the skipper Sanju Samson across all three facets in the bowling innings. Being their lead bowler in the death overs, the Royals could give a thought at retaining the services of the pacer who has only featured in two T20Is, with his last being in 2015.

MS Dhoni – Chennai Super Kings (CSK)

Arguably the first name in everyone’s thoughts when the rule was announced, the five-time champions will be pleased to see that they have a viable option of retaining the services of their former skipper at a manageable price-tag. But it is up to the man himself to decide whether his body can take the demands of a gruelling season with his knee injuries proving to be a massive concern. Dhoni last played an international game in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand which makes him eligible to be retained by CSK.
