Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu is a Tamil film directed by R Sundarrajan and starring actors Mohan, Radha and Amala in leading roles. The film was released on September 12, 1986, and completed 37 years on September 12, 2023.

The film was a hit at the box office and one of the biggest achievements was that it was written and directed by one of the renowned filmmakers. The film is still taken as a learning lesson for the young directors in the film industry.

Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu marked actor Mohan’s first film with AVM Productions, and the story revolved around two close childhood friends and how their lives changed. Tulasi and Subramani were two childhood friends, but Subramani later shifted to the city with his family. Tulasi had fallen in love with Subramani, but when his father arranged his marriage with Tulasi, he refused.

The story portrays how Subramani’s interest changed from Tulasi to Noorjahan, who was a student at his college. The audience could relate to the concept of the film and felt an immediate connection with such a love story.

Later, how Subramani saved Tulasi’s life when she wanted to give up her life for him was portrayed perfectly by the entire team. The music was given by Ilaiyaraaja and edited by R Bhaskaran. The cinematography was done by RajaRajan and marked another collaboration between the editor and the cinematographer.

On the other hand, AVM Production is considered one of the oldest production houses in India and has produced over 300 films in several film industries. The production house has introduced several prominent actors like Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, Rajkumar, and several others.

Mella Thirandhathu Kadhavu initially started at an average rate but later struck chords with the audience. Later, when the film was released in the Cinepriya Theatre in Madurai, a distributor split the film into two halves that were enjoyed by the audience. The film was later portrayed in two parts, showcasing the first part as the sad phase and slowly turning it into happiness. As per reports, AVM Productions later changed the parts, obtained a new sensor certificate, released the film separately, and gained huge popularity.
