Farming demands a lot of hard work and dedication. There are several types of cultivation which farmers are adopting these days. In Karamani Thopu village, near Orathanad town in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, a few farmers have started cultivating flowers annually on a few acres, which is currently garnering everyone’s attention. As per reports, this year, the farmers were cultivating flowers including Marigold and Maand Kozhikondai. In a few days, according to the farmers, the cultivation season of the flower crop will end, and they are going to plant groundnut, sesame and paddy.
Reports suggest that there were a few farmers who not only harvested but also sold the flowers. Marimuthu, a farmer from the same village, spoke about flower cultivation with Local 18. He said most farmers here cultivate the Maand Kozhikondai and Marigold flowers. He also did the same on about one and a half acres of land; but the flowers got rotten this time due to the heavy monsoon rains.
Marimuthu further said that in the next monsoon, they will cultivate flowers in a different way, so that they change colours and do not get spoiled. Marimuthu added that every farmer, who cultivated flowers this year, has suffered a huge loss of as much as Rs 10,000.
Marimuthu also shared that he also cultivated chicken on about one and a half acres of land. Now, he is going to plant sea cucumbers after the flowering period is over in ten days. He added that the flowers have rotted due to the recent rain; otherwise, he would have sold the flowers at a huge profit.
Marimuthu said that he has spent about Rs 25,000 on flower cultivation. Such problems with the changing season is very common throughout the year in this type of cultivation. He also added that, fortunately, the monsoon created havoc at the last moment; if it had rained mid-way, nothing could have been done; they would have then suffered total loss.
