West Bengal is fast becoming an investment hub with major investments by Tata and Hitachi lined up in the state.

Kolkata: Telco Construction Equipment Company Ltd (Telcon), 60:40 joint venture of Tata Motors and Japan's Hitachi Construction Machinery Co Ltd (HCMC), Thursday said it will set up a new manufacturing plant at Kharagpur in West Bengal.

The plant at an investment of Rs 2.5 billion would be spread over an area of 60 hectares, with additional facilities for a vendor park, said Telcon, the largest manufacturer of construction equipment in India.

The latest investment project by Tata-Telcon comes as a follow up after Tata announced its first car plant in May Hooghly district of West Bengal.

Telcon presently has two manufacturing plants in India located at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and at Dharwad in Karnataka, the company said in a statement.

The Kharagpur plant, to be located 120 km west from here would generate employment for about 500 people, including both direct and indirect jobs.

The construction work for the new plant would start by December, 2006 and the operations would commence by March, 2008. The new plant, along with the two existing facilities, will help meet both domestic and international needs.

The Kharagpur plant would manufacture backhoe loaders, midi excavators, off-highway dump trucks, wheel loaders and large mining shovels.
