New Delhi: Gujarat floods have reduced India's gas supplies by about half and cut crude output by 20,000 barrels a day as state-owned ONGC shut wells after its facilities were inundated by up to 10 ft of water.

Oil and Natural Gas Corp's (ONGC) Hazira gas processing complex was flooded last night forcing the company to shut down the facility.

Since Hazira could not receive gas, 27-28 million standard cubic meters per day of output from ONGC's Bassein field and 11-12 mmscmd gas from ONGC-Reliance-British Gas operated PMT was suspended.

Company chairman and Managing Director R S Sharma said gas supplies of 40,000 mmscmd from the Hazira Plant have been suspended.

The company's oil and gas output from its Mumbai High field goes to Uran in Maharashtra, which was operating normally.

But in PMT, oil and gas are produced from the same wells and since gas was not accepted at Hazira, oil output too was suspended.

"Off the 65-70 wells producing oil in the field, only 17 were operating this morning," an official said, adding that the crude oil output was down from 38,000 barrels per day to 18,000 barrels per day.

State-owned gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd chairman and managing director P Banerjee said the company's main trunk Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) pipeline was partially shut due to floods, as only its Vijaipur-Jagdishpur sector has been in function.
