Mumbai: Festive spirit seemed to have captured market mood as Sensex closed up 236.60 points at 13,708.34, and the Nifty up 69.35 points at 3940.5. The markets ended higher on the first day on the week back of broad based buying seen in scrips across sectors.
The stocks gradually moved upwards during the day to end with hefty gains. IT stocks were the ones leading the up-trend followed by banking, FMCG and auto stocks.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,805.56 up 84 points or 1.3 per cent.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,697.69 up 48.92 points or 0.9 per cent.
The BSE Bankex was up 1.8 per cent at 6,951.15. Oriental Bank, SBI, HDFC Bank, Canara Bank, PNB, Centurion BoP moved upwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.3 per cent at 9,034.06. KEC Infrastruct, Gammon India, Ingersoll Rand, Dredging Corp, Alstom Projects and HEG closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 1 per cent at 3,783.77. Sun Pharma, Cipla, GlaxoSmithKline, Wockhardt, Ranbaxy Labs closed higher.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.1 per cent to close at 6,193.47. ONGC, Reliance Natura, HPCL, MRPL, Reliance ended in green
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,433.92 up 1.7 per cent. Amtek Auto, Sundram, Ashok Leyland, Punj Tractors, Tata Motors, Cummins ended higher
The BSE Metal Index was up 1.2 per cent to close at 8,943.84. Sterlite Ind, SAIL, Jindal Saw, Hindalco, NALCO, Sesa Goa closed in green.
The BSE IT Index gained 2.8 per cent at 5,196.98. I-Flex Solution, Moser Baer, Wipro, Patni Computer, TCS advanced.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 1.8 per cent at 1,935.73. ITC, Nestle, Colgate, Shaw Wallace, Dabur India ended in green.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 6152.72 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 36430.71 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3055.12 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 45638.55 crore.
