New Delhi: The markets had a disappointing close after it spend better part of the day in the positive terrain. Profit booking set in at the higher level and closed near the low point of the day.
The mid cap and small cap indices ended marginally higher and the breadth was not very strong.
Nifty futures which were trading at a premium in the morning slipped and closed with a discount. Energy stocks from oil and gas and power sector were among the major losers dragging the markets down. Even capital good stocks ended weak.
However, metal and FMCG stocks were trading strong providing support to the markets.
Sensex closed down 10.28 points or 0.07 per cent at 13771.23, and the Nifty down 12.50 points or 0.31 per cent at 4066.8.
About 1205 shares have advanced, 1311 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,951.49 down 0.5 per cent.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,816.12 down 0.4 per cent. The BSE FMCG Index lost 0.9 per cent at 1,819.39. Britannia, Shaw Wallace, ITC, Colgate closed in red.
The BSE Metal Index was up 1.4 per cent to close at 9,932.54. Guj NRE Coke, Hind Zinc, Tata Steel, Sterlite Ind were among the losers.
The BSE Health Care Index was down 0.1 per cent at 3,697.23. Ranbaxy Labs, Sun Pharma, Pfizer, Novartis India, Orchid Chemical closed lower.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.7 per cent at 9,873.68. Crompton Greave, Siemens, Praj Industries, Dredging Corp, Aban Offshore ended lower
The BSE Auto Index closed at 4,997.33 down 0.2 per cent. TVS Motor, Mah and Mah, Sundram, Tata Motors, Maruti Udyog among the losers.
The BSE IT Index closed at 4,878.17 down 0.2 per cent. Patni Computer, Mphasis, Hexaware Tech, TCS ended weak.
The BSE Bankex was up 0.2 per cent at 6,863.90. Allahabad Bank, Andhra Bank, Union Bank, Bank of Baroda closed lower. The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 7,156.38 down 1 per cent. ONGC, IOC, Reliance, GAIL closed in red.
