Markets open weak, cement stocks firm
The markets opened weak with moderate losses on the back of weak performance of IT and banking stocks.

Mumbai: After a spectacular pullback on Thursday, the markets opened weak with moderate losses on the back of weak performance of IT and banking stocks. However, cement stocks were drawing attention in the morning trade.

At 0956 hours IST, Sensex was down 20 points at 13,139 and Nifty was down six points at 3,804.

Major gainers in the opening trade were Guj Ambuja, ACC, HLL, ITC, Hindalco, Grasim, ONGC and Bajaj Auto.

However, Rel Comm, Satyam, Reliance, Tata Motors, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, L&T and Dr Reddys Lab were trading low.

Asian Markets:

Asian stocks traded mixed on Friday, with Japan's Nikkei average declining for a fourth session in a row as Toyota Motor Corp., Sony Inc. and other export-oriented shares lost ground after the yen touched a two-and-a-half month high against the dollar in US trading.

Japan's Nikkei plunged 1.33 per cent or 232.85 points at 17,220.66, Singapore's Straits Times was down 0.32 per cent or 9.95 points at 3,082.63.

However, Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 0.74 per cent or 143.82 points at 19,490.42.

Taiwan's Taiwan Weighted firmed up 0.04 per cent or 3.40 points at 7,682.07 and South Korea's Seoul Composite was flat at 1,417.72.
