Sensex rose for the third straight day by over 69 points on heavy buying by funds largely in cement stocks.

New Delhi: Bucking an early weak trend, the markets ended with marginal gains on the last trading day of the week.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex rose for the third straight day by over 69 points on heavy buying by funds largely in cement stocks.

The markets opened weak but picked up some momentum during the noon trades.

However, they could not sustain its position at the higher levels and ended the day with slim gains.

The 30-share sensitive index, which opened higher by 75 points, rebound to settle with a gain of 69.31 points, or 0.54 per cent at 12,856.08 as cement stocks firmed up on reports that the core commodity majors cement companies might reduce prices.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty rose by 18.75 points at 3,752, after touching day's low of 3,709.15.

However, the midacp and smallcap indices outperformed the broader markets. The volumes were relatively low even in Thursday's session.

Metal stocks were star performers followed by banking and capital good stocks.

Tata Steel, Reliance Energy, Grasim, Hindalco, ACC were among the gainers on the indices.

ACC, the largest cement maker rose Rs 7.45, or 1.04 per cent at Rs 721.90, Grasim, the third-biggest cement maker, added Rs 49.10, or 2.38 per cent to Rs 2,113 and Gujarat Ambuja Cements, the fourth largest, gained 95 paise to 105.90.

Refinery stocks led by Reliance Industries and ONGC fell as oil prices declined after Iran said it will release 15 British sailors and marines.

On weekly basis the indices end in red down about 2 per cent mainly due to the carnage on Monday.
