Market ends flat: NTPC, Sun Pharma top gainers

New Delhi: The markets ended the day on a flat note after hovering around its previous close for major part of the day.

US lended strong cues by closing higher on Tuesday but Asia ended mixed with a positive bias. Selective buying was seen in realty, IT, power and metal stocks.

However, selling pressure was seen in capital goods, auto and oil & gas stocks. Broader markets outperformed the frontline indices, BSE Midcap index is up 0.1 per cent and small cap index is up 0.2 per cent.

Top gainers on the indices are Sun Pharma, Suzlon Enegy, Tata Power, Zee Entertainment, NTPC, Cipla, HUL and Infosys.

Sensex was down 19.25 points or 0.12 per cent at 15446.15, and the Nifty down 3.40 points or 0.08 per cent at 4475.85.

About 1567 shares have advanced, 1379 shares declined, and 73 shares are unchanged.

The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,773.34 up 7 points or 0.11 per cent. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 8,289.81 up 19 points or 0.23 per cent.

The BSE Capital Goods Index was closed at 13,566.71 down 0.5 per cent. Jyoti Structure, Crompton Greave, Bharat Bijlee, Kalpataru Power, Kirloskar Bros closed higher.

The BSE Auto Index closed closed flat at 4,876.96. Maruti Udyog, TVS Motor, Bharat Forge, Hind Motors ended in the red.

The BSE Metal Index closed at 11,598.59 up 0.5 per cent. Shree Precoated, JSW Steel, Sesa Goa, Mah Seamless, Sterlite Ind advanced.

The BSE FMCG Index gained 0.4 per cent at 2,001.21. United Spirits, United Brewerie, Dabur India, Colgate, HUL ended in green.

BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 8,141.59 down 0.6 per cent. Essar Oil, Reliance Natura, Reliance, HPCL, Petronet LNG closed in red.

The BSE IT Index closed at 4,646.29 up 0.4 per cent. Mphasis, HCL Tech, Wipro, I-Flex Solution closed higher.

The BSE Bankex was up 0.2 per cent at 8,018.42. Andhra Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Federal Bank closed higher.

The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10928.72 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 42642.91 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5146.37 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 58718 crore.
