Mysore: IT bellwether Infosys Technologies Ltd will invest Rs 12 billion ($258 million) during the current fiscal for creating the world's largest global education centre at its sprawling 335-acre campus in Mysore.
The Mysore campus, which also houses the world's largest corporate leadership institute (Infosys Leadership Institute), will have a total built-up area of 6.2 million sq feet with four software development blocks to seat about 6,400 techies, when completed.
"We have already invested Rs 7.7 billion and the balance (Rs 4.3 billion) will be spent by March 2007. The investment in the centre alone will be Rs 8 billion," said T V Mohandas Pai, Infosys head for human resource, education and research.
The company will spend $100 million on training about 20,000 engineering graduates, who will be hired over a period of time. The entire facility, including the extended campus will have a capacity to train 35,000-40,000 graduates every year.
"We spend about $5,000 on training each graduate selected for the global training programme (GTP)," Pai said.
Incidentally, 126 graduates from various universities in the US have joined the facility, coinciding with the company's 25th year of celebrations.
Infosys chairman and chief mentor NR Narayana Murthy told reporters later that the arrival of these American graduates marked the creation of a true global village at the centre.
"We have trainees from the world over who will begin their professional careers with Infosys. The collective capabilities they will develop as Infoscions will create a more competitive business model," Murthy said.
Murthy also said US students were open to job opportunities in Indian firms. "It is for us to ensure they see better value in joining us than IBM or other global companies," he pointed out.
