New Delhi: Earlier this year, when Indra Nooyi was named the CEO of global soft drink giant PepsiCo, soft drink firms across the board were facing a lot of hostility and uncertainty in India over the pesticide content issue. Yet, Nooyi had made it clear in no uncertain terms that India will be a key focus area of her business strategy.
True to her words, Nooyi has landed in India just months after taking over as the CEO of the soft drink giant to do business in the country of her origin. Nooyi is scheduled to begin her India Mission with an interaction with industrialists at the American Chamber of Commerce in India and taking an overview of the business operations in New Delhi on Monday.
Nooyi is also likely to interact with media on Monday. According to a PepsiCo spokesperson, "Nooyi will visit Indian operations during her stay in India for the next few days. She will also be vacationing during the visit."
Nooyi succeeded Steven S Reinemund as the Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo from October 1. She had joined the $33 billion global convenient foods and beverages company in 1994 and has served as president and CFO since 2001, when she was also named to PepsiCo's board of directors.
Born in Chennai, Nooyi graduated in science from the Madras Christian College. After doing her MBA from IIM-C, she did her graduation in management from Yale University. Fortune magazine had named her among the '50 most powerful women in America'. In 2005, Wall Street Journal named her in its list of 50 women to watch.
After being named the CEO, Nooyi described her elevation as a humbling experience. "I am humbled by the opportunity to lead PepsiCo, and profoundly grateful to follow in the footsteps of Steve Reinemund, Roger Enrico, Wayne Calloway and Don Kendall."
Nooyi also serves on the boards of Motorola, the International Rescue Committee, and the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts.
