One of Bollywood’s most sought-after actors now, Kareena Kapoor made her debut in the film industry alongside Abhishek Bachchan in JP Dutta’s Refugee in 2000. The film not only received critical acclaim but also earned her a Filmfare Award For Best Female Debut. In an interview with Rediff in May 2000, just before her acting debut, Kareena talked about her relationship with Abhishek and shared her thoughts on his father, megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
On being asked how she would ‘rate Abhishek Bachchan in their film (Refugee)’, Kareena had said, “As an actor, he is better, at least I find him a thousandfold better… His father (Amitabh Bachchan) was the best, but he is going to be better than the best. I am sure about it. As a person, he is wonderful, he is one of my closest friends.”
Kareena also remembered her first scene in Refugee – a romantic scene between Abhishek and her. She said, “We were very comfortable from day one because he is part of my family and a close friend of mine. The chemistry was there right from the word go.”
In the early 2000s, there were rumours that Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor, Kareena’s elder sister, were about to marry. Karisma was often seen with the Bachchan family at events. However, Karisma and Abhishek eventually went their separate ways. Abhishek married Aishwarya Rai in 2007, while Karisma wed Delhi-based businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003. They have a daughter, Samaira (born in 2005), and a son, Kiaan (born in 2010). Karisma and Sunjay divorced in 2016.
Meanwhile, Kareena, during an interview with Rajeev Masand in 2009, said that despite things going south between her sister Karisma and Abhishek, she will have a special place for Abhishek. She said, “I have always maintained that Abhishek is the first actor with whom I gave my first shot. To me, he holds a very special place in my heart that no actor and no person can ever take. When I look at him, I look at him with pride, joy and with happiness. It’s sad things went sour.”
