Bengaluru city is the crucial front amongst all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka as it holds the power to influence other regions such as Kolar, Tumkur, Hassan and Mysuru. Polling will take place in all four Bangalore Lok Sabha seats on April 26, and results will be declared on June 4.

The four Lok Sabha seats are Bangalore North, Bangalore South, Bangalore Central and Bangalore Rural. Bangalore Rural, Bangalore Central, Bangalore North and Bangalore South comprise eight legislative segments each.

In the 2019 elections, DK Sukesh won Bangalore Rural – the only Lok Sabha seat that the Congress could secure in the entire election. The BJP swept the remaining three Lok Sabha seats of Bangalore with PC Mohan, DV Sadananda Gowda and Ananth Kumar as winners from Bangalore Central, Bangalore North and Bangalore South. The BJP won 25 of the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka in 2019 – its highest tally ever in the state.

Let us look at the four Bangalore Lok Sabha constituencies in detail.

BANGALORE NORTH

It covers KR Puram, Byatarayanapura, Yeshvanthapura, Dasarahalli, Mahalakshmi Layout, Malleshwaram, Hebbal, Pulakeshinagar.

Demographics

The urban general constituency comprises 12.5% Scheduled Castes, 12.9% Muslims and 2.2% Scheduled Tribes of the total 66,08,302 population. The estimated literacy level of Bangalore North is 87.78%.

2019 Lok Sabha Election

BJP candidate DV Sadananda Gowda won from Bangalore North with a total of 8,24,500 votes. BJP defeated Congress’ Krishna Byregowda, who received 6,76,982 votes. Bangalore North is one of BJP’s strongholds in Karnataka.

Other Lok Sabha Elections

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate DV Sadananda Gowda won from Bangalore North, securing 7,18,326 votes. He had defeated Congress’ C Narayana Swamy. BJP had a vote share of 52.95% in 2014 in the seat. There was a total of 14 contestants in 2014. In 2009, DB Chandre Gowda of BJP won the seat by defeating Congress by a margin of 59,665 votes. BJP then had a vote share of 45.21% in the constituency. There were 28 contestants in 2009. In 2004, BJP’s Dr HT Sangliana won by a margin of 30,358 votes. In 1999, Congress’ CK Jaffar Sharief won by a margin of 1,75, 605 votes, that is, 17.1% of the total votes polled.

BANGALORE SOUTH

It covers Govindraj Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Basavanagudi, Chickpet, Padmanabha Nagar, Jayanagar, Bommanahalli and BTM Layout.

Demographics

The urban general constituency has an estimated 12.5% Scheduled Castes, 12.97% Muslims and 2% Scheduled Tribes of the total 30,38,162. The estimated literacy level of Bangalore South is 88.99%.

2019 Lok Sabha Election

BJP’s Tejasvi Surya defeated Congress’ BK Hariprasad by securing 7,39,229 votes, which is 62% of the total votes polled. Hariprasad got more than 4 lakh votes. This constituency witnessed a 53.47% voter turnout. Surya became the youngest BJP MP at the age of 28 to assume office in the 17th Lok Sabha.

Other Lok Sabha Elections

Ananth Kumar has been consistently winning the Bangalore South Lok Sabha seat in the last four parliamentary elections. In 2014, he defeated Congress’ Nandan Nilekani by a margin of 2,28,575 votes, which was 20.52% of the total 11,13,726 votes polled in the constituency. BJP had a vote share of 56.91% in 2014 in the seat. In 2009, Kumar won against Congress’ Krishna Byre Gowda by a margin of 37,612 votes which was 4.14% of the total votes polled. BJP had a vote share of 48.16% in 2019 in the constituency. In 2004 and 1999, Kumar has been winning the seat with more than 8 lakh votes consistently. He won his first Parliamentary seat in 1996. He died in 2018 at the age of 59 years after suffering from lung cancer.

BANGALORE CENTRAL

It covers Sarvagnanagar, CV Raman Nagar (SC), Shivajinagar, Shanti Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Rajaji Nagar, Chamrajpet, Mahadevapura (SC).

Demographics

This urban general constituency has around 5.5 lakh Tamils, 4.5 lakh Muslims, and 2 lakh Christians. It has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 16.04% and a Scheduled Tribe population of 1.6%. There are also a number of Marwaris and Gujaratis in this area. The literacy level of Bangalore Central is 88.53%.

2019 Lok Sabha Election

Bangalore Central witnessed a 54.29% voter turnout, with BJP candidate PC Mohan winning against Congress’ Rizwan Arshad with a margin of 70,968 votes. Mohan secured 6,02,853 votes. Independent candidate actor Prakash Raj came third with 28,906 votes.

Other Lok Sabha Elections

The constituency held its first parliamentary election in 2009 with BJP candidate PC Mohan defeating Congress’ HT Sangliana by a margin of 35,218 votes, which was 4.16% of the total votes polled. The voter turnout was 44.55% in the constituency. In 2014, BJP’s PC Mohan (5.57 lakh votes) won against Arshad (4.19 lakh votes) by a margin of 1.37 lakh votes. This election saw about 55% voter turnout, with the BJP securing a vote share of 51.84% in 2014 in this seat. Interestingly, in this election, the Aam Aadmi Party contested the Lok Sabha election for the first time, and came third, while JD(S) and BSP candidates held fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

BANGALORE RURAL

It covers Kunigal, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Bangalore South, Anekal (SC), Magadi, Ramanagaram, Kanakapura and Channapatna regions.

Demographics

Bangalore Rural has nearly 24 lakh voters. The seat came into existence after delimitation in 2008, and the first election was fought in 2009. This semi-urban general constituency has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 16.45% and a Scheduled Tribe population of 2.78%. The estimated literacy level of Bangalore Rural is 77.49%.

2019 Lok Sabha Election

Bangalore Rural witnessed a 64.89% voter turnout in 2019, with Congress-JD(S) alliance candidate DK Suresh retaining the seat with a margin of 2,06,870 votes against BJP’s Ashwath Narayan Gowda. Suresh secured 8,78,258 votes. BSP’s Chinappa Vai Chikkahagade came third with 19,972 votes.

Other Lok Sabha Elections

In 2014, the Congress managed to save the Bengaluru Rural seat with DK Suresh defeating BJP’s Muniraju Gowda by nearly 2.31 lakh votes despite Narendra Modi wave. Suresh received 6.52 lakh votes, while Gowda could only secure 4.21 lakh votes. Congress had a vote share of 44.76% in 2014 in the seat. A total of 15 candidates were in the fray in 2014. In 2009, HD Kumaraswamy of JDS emerged victorious in this seat by defeating the BJP candidate by a margin of 1,30,275 votes which was 11.81% of the total votes polled. JDS had a vote share of 44.73% in 2019, in the constituency. There were 15 contestants in 2009.
