'OTT Platforms Claim Kannada Films Not Profitable For Them': Rishab Shetty
Rishab Shetty has time and again emphasized his deep love and affection for Kannada cinema

Kannada actor Rishab Shetty became a known name all over India with last year’s smash hit Kantara. Kantara was among the three Kannada films, other than KGF: Chapter 2 and 777 Charlie last year that did great business even in the northern states. The unconventional tale, which combined contemporary drama and action with a mythological and spiritual touch appealed to people. The core customs, myths and beliefs of the Dakshina Kannada diaspora were explored in the movie, mainly the ritual of Bhoota Kola.

It has been reported that Rishab Shetty was approached by filmmakers from other industries after the recognition he got from Kantara but the actor has decided to stick to Kannada films. When asked why he does not want to explore other Indian film industries, he said that when Kannada films are now becoming pan-India hits and becoming known nationally, there is no need for him to explore cinema in other languages. Rishab Shetty has time and again emphasized his deep love and affection for Kannada cinema.

Rishab is waiting for OTT platforms to open their doors to Kannada cinema. Speaking with journalists outside of the current International Film Festival of India (IFFI), Rishab stated that Kannada films were previously able to make money by taking part in events such as the NFDC Film Bazaar.

However, the markets crashed as a result of the OTT platforms and the COVID-19 pandemic. He claims that because one Kannada commercial film failed, OTT platforms are not accepting Kannada films.

“At this point, the OTT platforms claim that opening doors for Kannada films is not profitable for them. That is sad. You cannot claim that there is no market for an industry or that there are no subscribers based just on the failure of one movie”, he said.

Rishab recently made news for the first look of the prequel to Kantara titled Kantara: Chapter 1. With more than 10 million views on YouTube in less than a day, the teaser offers us a glimpse of Karnataka under the Kadamba Dynasty’s rule.
