Is Fintech more or less banking? Well, imagine if banking had a cool younger sibling who knows how to use smartphones and doesn’t think emojis are some ancient hieroglyphics. That’s fintech! Now, banking is like that traditional, slightly grumpy uncle who insists on writing cheques and has a stash of pens from the ’80s. Fintech, on the other hand, is the hipster cousin who’s all about making money stuff easier, faster, and as fun as a penguin on rollerblades. So, when a Mumbai banker threw shade on Bengalureans, claiming they’re oblivious to finance but quick to label anything tech-related as ‘fintech’, it sparked an online conversation, yielding diverse reactions.
It all started when a user @PeteJaison took to the micro-blogging site ‘X’ and wrote, “Heard this in a bank meeting: Mumbai banker: You Bangalore people don’t know anything about finance. You understand a bit of tech and then, call it fintech. We’ve been doing this for 10 years and we still call it banking.” The post quickly went viral, triggering a wave of responses.

“This is soo true!!! Been both in mumbai and Bengaluru, the same role when doing in mumbai is in banking and doing in Bengaluru is fintech. Even the terminologies are different! Pure banking remains in mumbai!” declared one user. Another fired back, “Response from Bangalore people – you Mumbai people don’t understand technology that’s why you still call it banking after 10 years” while a third cheered, “He’s spot on tbf.”

Not everyone nodded in agreement with the Mumbai banker, and they made their dissenting voices heard – all in good fun, of course. “Mumbai guy will be found in BLR asking to code their app,” quipped one user, as another teased, “Kamath brothers laughing hard at this joke.”

In a nutshell, for those still scratching their heads, fintech is the rockstar of finance, making money matters cooler, quicker, and more convenient.
