The ongoing Test against New Zealand is a must-win for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian men’s cricket team if it wants to confirm its place in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025. If India manages to whitewash New Zealand in the ongoing three-match series, then even after losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India will qualify for the WTC final next year.
India is coming into the first Test against New Zealand after whitewashing Bangladesh in Test and T20I series. India won the Test series opener against the Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side by 280 runs in Chennai and defeated them by 7 wickets in the second Test played at Green Park in Kanpur from September 27 to October 1.
India has won seven out of eight Tests played so far in 2024, and the hosts will be desperate to maintain the top show against the Kiwis as well, who are coming into the series after losing four Tests in a row and will also miss the services of star batter Kane Williamson in the series opener due to a groin injury.
