Tata Motors, the renowned Indian automaker, is gearing up to make a significant splash in the midsize SUV-coupe segment with its upcoming model, the Tata Curvv.
Following the recent launches of updated versions of popular SUVs like Nexon, Harrier and Safari, Tata Motors has shifted its focus entirely to the development of the new Curvv, the brand’s first SUV coupe. The Curvv, which was showcased at the Auto Expo 2023 in a near-production form, was recently spotted during a trial run on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway, giving car enthusiasts a glimpse of what to expect upon its official launch.
Despite being heavily camouflaged, the test mule revealed some key design elements of the Tata Curvv. One of its standout features is the coupe-like sloping roofline, distinguishing it from its rivals in the crowded SUV-coupe market. The vehicle boasts vertically-stacked headlamps, full-width LED lighting at the front and rear, sequential turn indicators, sporty 17-inch alloy wheels, a tall boot section, and edgy tail lamps. Notably, the test model was equipped with flush door handles, a first for a production-spec Tata car, enhancing its sleek profile.
Inside the Curvv, Tata is expected to offer a comprehensive range of features, some of which will be shared with the recently launched Nexon EV facelift. Ventilated front seats, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, touch-sensitive HVAC panel, wireless smartphone connectivity, auto-dimming IRVMs, air purifier, wireless charger, sunroof, and a new two-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo are among the anticipated interior offerings.
Safety remains a top priority for Tata, as evidenced by its commitment to high crash test ratings in recent vehicle launches. The Curvv is expected to continue this trend, featuring six airbags, a 360 degree surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in the top-spec variants.
In terms of performance, Tata has been tight-lipped about the specifics of the Curvv’s electric powertrain. However, it is anticipated to be based on the company’s Gen2 platform, providing an electric range of around 500 km. For the internal combustion engine (ICE) version, Tata will introduce a new 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, capable of generating 125 bhp of maximum power and 225 Nm of peak torque. The vehicle might also feature a 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT), similar to the one available with the Nexon facelift.
Tata Motors aims to make the Curvv an attractive choice for buyers by focusing on competitive pricing. The electric version is projected to be priced around Rs 20 lakh, positioning it as a compelling alternative to electric SUVs like the Hyundai Kona Electric and MG ZS EV. The ICE model of the Curvv is expected to start at around Rs 10.50 lakh(ex-showroom), offering a compelling option for customers.
