New Delhi: The Maruti Suzuki Alto has a reputation of being one of the largest-selling cars in the Indian market for a very long time. Then, along came the revamped Alto 800 to win customer hearts again.
The Alto 800 LXi was the most expensive variant available thus far. Now, the car has been given a more aesthetically pleasing and feature laden variant - the Alto 800 VXi.
The top-end Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 VXi now comes with central locking, air conditioning with a heater option, power steering, front power windows, dual-tone upholstery, dual trip meters, digital clock, remote fuel lid and hatch opener, tubeless tyres, body coloured bumpers and door handles, USB compatible audio system that has four speakers, left rear view mirror and a driver's side airbag as standard features. Cosmetic variations on the outside include side mouldings on the doors and a rear spoiler.
The Alto 800 is powered by a 796cc three-cylinder petrol engine delivering 48PS and 69Nm of torque, which is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. A CNG-powered Alto is also available as an option. OVERDRIVE drove the car last year, and we found the car to be a marked improvement over the previous Alto, with improved suspension and headroom.
Nevertheless, with competition like the Hyundai Eon, the Alto 800 had come up slightly short in our comparison. Hyundai is able to offer sixteen variants of the Eon, while Maruti was stuck on three for the Alto 800. With the improved equipment list of the new VXi, the decision may be a bit harder.
There are six colour options for the Alto 800 - Superior White, Silky Silver, Granite Grey, Frost Blue, Blazing Red and Torque Blue.
The Alto 800 VXi with metallic paint is priced at ? 3.4 lakhs (ex-showroom Mumbai).
