AGRASEN JAYANTI 2023: Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti is the birthday of the legendary king Maharaja Agrasen of Agroha. This day is observed on the fourth day of Ashwin, as per the Hindu calendar, and this year, it will be observed on October 15. The auspicious day is a regional holiday in the states of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh and is commemorated with huge zest with extravagant preparations and events by his descendants. For those who are unaware, Maharaja Agrasen is said to have been the originator of the Agrahari and Agrawal communities, and Indians generally believe him to be the forefather of this community, which is why the festival is celebrated with utmost love and devotion.
The word ‘Agrawal’ is derived from two words: ‘Agra’ and ‘wal’, where ‘Agra’ means ‘Agrasen’ and ‘wal’ means son. Maharaja Agrasen preached unity and harmony in society, which is why a number of social welfare activities are organised by his followers to spread the message of brotherhood and an equal vision for all. Moreover, the Government of India also launched a postage stamp in 1976 on his 5100th birth anniversary in an effort to honour him.
