London: Several people are feared to be dead after a helicopter and an aircraft crashed in mid-air near Buckinghamshire, northwest of London, on Friday afternoon.
At least seven fire appliances and emergency search vehicles have been sent to the scene. Thames Valley Police, which is also at the scene, confirmed the crash and said “preservation of life is a priority”.
South Central Ambulance Service said the incident had caused “a number of casualties”. A spokeswoman said: “We received the call at 12.09pm, for a mid-air collision involving a helicopter and an aircraft in Upper Winchendon, near Aylesbury.
Police also confirmed there were a number of casualties. "We're aware of a number of casualties following an incident this afternoon in Waddesdon, Aylesbury," they said in a statement.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch said it was sending a team to the site of the accident, which is in dense woodland.
The crash took place near Waddesdon Manor, which is managed by the Rothschild Foundation, a family charitable trust, on behalf of the National Trust. The manor said the crash did not happen at the site and there were no casualties at the manor.
A nearby military base, RAF Halton, also said no military aircraft were involved.
