EuroSport commentator Bob Ballard was removed from his role at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday (AEST) following a sexist comment made during the broadcast of Australia’s gold medal win in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday (AEST).
As Australia’s relay team celebrated their victory, Ballard was heard saying, “Well the women are just finishing up. You know what women are like … hanging around, doing their make-up.” His comment quickly went viral and drew widespread criticism.
Co-commentator Lizzie Simmonds described Ballard’s remark as “outrageous,” prompting a swift response from EuroSport, Fox Sports reported. In a statement, the broadcaster said, “During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment.
To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.” Ballard has not publicly addressed his removal but posted a message on X wishing EuroSport’s Laura Winter good luck for the night session, saying, “Have a great one.”
The incident occurred on what was a triumphant day for Australian fans as their team secured gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:28.92. The victory marked Australia’s fourth consecutive win in this event. The USA and China finished in second and third place, respectively.
As the Games continue, Ballard will not be part of the coverage during Paris 2024, which is being celebrated by the IOC as “The Equal Games” due to its historic 50/50 gender split among athletes. Marie Sallois, IOC Corporate and Sustainable Development Director, praised the milestone, saying, “We are happy and proud to celebrate this historic achievement in gender parity.”
