Cricket fans in Bengaluru had been eagerly awaiting this moment since 2008 when the Royal Challengers Bangalore first debuted in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite participating in every season of the franchise tournament, the team never claimed the championship title until now.
From Rahul Dravid to Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers to Chris Gayle, many legendary cricketers have donned the iconic red jersey across IPL seasons but have failed to lift the title. The long-awaited dream has finally been fulfilled by the women’s brigade, which beat Delhi Capitals by eighth wickets at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium to engrave the name of RCB on the coveted WPL trophy.

Following RCB’s first WPL victory, one fan wrote on X, “If you had told me a few years ago that crowds would flood the streets, block roads to celebrate a women’s league title win, would have brushed it off. The scale of these celebrations signifies a paradigm shift, that could well redefine the landscape of women’s cricket in this country.”

Royal Challengers Bangalore, who could not produce anything significant last season, have certainly dominated this year’s WPL campaign. They defeated defending champions Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator to book their ticket to the final. Ellyse Perry and Shreyanka Patil deserve much credit for RCB’s WPL triumph. Perry has won the Orange Cap after aggregating 347 runs this season while Patil has clinched the Purple Cap by picking a total of 13 wickets.
