The rare and enchanting Neelakurinji flowers are currently blooming in large numbers in the Nilgiri Hills of Tamil Nadu, creating a vivid blue landscape. This phenomenon is greatly awaited because it only happens once every 12 years. Because of this rarity, a natural wonder is created that draws tourists and nature lovers from all over the world. Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, Supriya Sahu, recently posted stunning images of the rare Neelakurinji blooms on X (formerly Twitter).

The flowers bloom in all their splendour. In one photo, a man sits amidst a sea of blue blossoms, with the azure sky enhancing the scene’s beauty.

A video in the post shows the vivid blue blossoms that are peaking through the verdant greenery.

“Kuttan a Toda tribesman sits proudly among the blooming Neelakurinji flowers in Nilgiris. Flowers of Neelkurinji bloom once in 12 years cycle. It is said that Nilgiris gets its name due to the magical blue hue imparted by these stunning flowers,” IAS officer Sahu captioned her post.

“Neelakurinji Strobilanthes kunthiana has most recently been assessed for The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2024 and listed as Vulnerable emphasising the need for its conservation,” the post further mentioned.

The post has collected over 37,000 views. People on social media were astounded to see images of these unusual flowers. They couldn’t help but express their amazement. Many others have shared their thoughts regarding the conservation of this particular type of plant.

A user commented, “The beauty of these flowers is truly mesmerising! It’s a wonder that they bloom only once in 12 years.”

Another called it, “The Magical and rarity quality of the nature’s creation.”

“These rare flower species should be protected by all means,” said a concerned user.

“WoW beautiful – So is this place protected under UNESCO World Natural Heritage please?” another anxious user wrote.

According to a blog by Kerala Tourism, some of the Neelakurinji flowers blossom just once in their lives, at which point they set seeds and perish.
