A Venezuelan migrant has invited the wrath of online users for a video in which he can be seen outlining the ways illegal immigrants could invoke squatting laws and ‘invade’ American houses. In the controversial video, the man, identified as Leonal Moreno, suggested how abandoned properties could be seized and inhabited under different circumstances. He even shared anecdotes of his acquaintances who have managed to get themselves not one but multiple homes using similar tactics in an attempt to provoke them.
In his TikTok video, Leonal Moreno said, “I have thought about invading a house in the United States. I found out that there is a law that says that if a house is not inhabited, we can seize it.” The video which has been going viral of late further shows the Venezuelan man as saying, “I invite you to look for [his] mother, and all of us join to pay the bail, so that this young Venezuelan feels that you’re not alone in difficult times, but remembers that there is a God up there who sees. Today it could be him; tomorrow it could be you… He did something wrong; it’s okay.”
Disseminating his message in Spanish, Moreno goes on to announce that his next line of business is “invading abandoned houses.” Further, he also outlines how his African friends have already found seven US homes adding that this is the only way migrants will not be a “public burden.” The video dropped by Venezuelan TikToker has once again fuelled the issue of migrants in the US, significantly dividing the internet.
Speaking of Squatter’s rights (AKA “adverse possession”), the laws are prevalent in all 50 states but aren’t uniform across the nation. In some states, these laws provide prominent rights to occupants who haven’t paid rent or even entered illegally. Conversely, in other cases, lengthy legal processes are required for property owners to reclaim their homes from the ones who acquired the house only by living there for 30 days.
