During a demolition project of Owatonna High School in Owatonna, Minnesota, USA, construction workers stumbled upon a time capsule dating back to 1920 in the rubble. The capsule was found as the construction crew was tearing down the front pillars and doors of the school. The time capsule was unravelled during a community event today. The items uncovered inside included a roster of the teachers and administrators at Owatonna Public Schools in 1920 and a high school magnet. A school newspaper, three local newspapers, and financial statements were also found in the time capsule. A time capsule is a collection of objects put together to store the memory of a place. Time capsules could also preserve the experience or group of people at one point in time.
The school district’s superintendent, Jeff Elstad, talked more about it in an interaction with Fox Television Stations. He said, “We were thrilled to discover that a time capsule had been placed in the cornerstone of the high school. It’s always exciting to learn more about the history of our community and the people who had the foresight to build a great school that would serve so many students for generations.”
According to Jeff, it can never be known what might exactly be included in the time capsule. Many things such as newspapers and local history are similar to what is included in a time capsule. He said that it was fun to discover the items that specifically shared information about the schools at that time.
The Owatonna High School Museum Committee has collaborated with the Steele County Historical Society to dry and store the items. Following the preservation, it will then be decided which of the items will be displayed at the school and which will be moved into the historical society’s collections.
Jeff said the discovery has allowed the community to gather knowledgeable inputs on local history. According to him, he and the Owatonna High School Museum Committee appreciated the historical significance of the time capsule. As per Jeff, he is committed to continuing the preservation of history for the generations to come.
