Workplace expectations can sometimes become overly strict, causing frustration and raising questions about fairness. A recent Reddit post highlights such a situation where a man faced criticism from his company for leaving work early just by a minute or two. The post, which has garnered significant attention, is titled, “Is this normal for a workplace?”
The Redditor shared the screenshot where his employer is reprimanding him for clocking out a minute or two before his official end time of 5 PM. The employer emphasised that leaving even a minute early was unacceptable unless explicitly approved by a supervisor.
“Also, I have been noticing that when you are scheduled to leave at 5pm that you are not waiting until 5pm to clock out. As we have gone over before in the past, all technicians are only able to clock out before scheduled time is when it is approved by I or myself. Please do not make this a habit. These are the days that you were scheduled and left before scheduled time without any approval over the past couple of months,” the employer wrote.
The post reveals that the man’s log out times showed he consistently left just before his scheduled time.

Since the post went online, it has ignited a discussion among social media users, with many sharing their own workplace experiences.
One user commented “That’s exactly what my work does, we all stand around milling at the machine until the exact moment we are allowed to clock out. So I stand around the machine until it’s time to clock in. I used to be that person that clocked in 10-15 minutes early and didn’t stress about it. Now they get exactly 8 hours out of me no more no less.”
Another shared, “No they want you to work until 5 to get every second they can out of you. Then they want you to vanish. Because they’re not paying you the extra 2 mins it takes to gather up your stuff and leave. Clowns. Ops manager is a clown.”
“This kind of policy contributed to me being fired once, many years ago. It amounted to me being between 60 and 180 seconds late clocking in too many times,” someone else pointed out.
“I used to wait by the clock for 5pm as my manager made it clear his manager kept an eye on timesheets. However, when they started treating us like adults and removed the clock out machine, a few minutes here or there was fine,” a person shared.
A commenter wrote, “No – this is insanity. These types of companies need to be put out of business.”
