Shemaroo Umang’s upcoming show, Shamshaan Champa, promises to delve into the world of supernatural thrillers. Set to premiere on August 20, the show will see Monalisa portraying the role of an antagonist. The actress, known for her Bigg Boss stint, will be seen playing Mohini, a witch with a quest for power and immortality in the show. Ahead of the new stint, Monalisa sat down for a candid conversation with an entertainment portal and opened up on the perks of playing an antagonist.
When asked about the reason behind joining Shamshaan Champa, Monalisa told ETimes, “I have played multiple roles in the past, many of which are evil or negative. Adding Mohini, the daayan to the mix felt natural. The show’s storyline is unique and really piqued my curiosity about how it will unfold. Playing Mohini will be different since her looks, traits and strategies will not follow the usual approach, and I’m very excited about that.”
As Monalisa continued to reflect on the character traits of Mohini, she added, “Mohini is not someone you can fool or distract from her goals. She possesses unimaginable power and determination to achieve what she desires. To portray her, I must be precise and sharp-just like her.”
Even in the past, Monalisa has played antagonist in various shows. Given the actress’ choices to play the negative roles, she was also asked if she is okay with being typecast in similar characters. Responding to this, Monalisa noted, “Not at all! I love playing such roles. There is so much to do in such characters. For example, when I did Nazar, which was a show on similar lines, I had a variety of emotions to play on screen. I even did so many stunts. Playing an antagonist gives an actor so much scope for acting.”
Last month, the makers of Shamshaan Champa released the show’s promo, giving us a glimpse of Champa, played by Trupati Mishra. It opens with the lead character running away from a crowd of masked men. However, the men attack her and leave her injured near a banyan tree. Just the next moment, we see a mysterious shadow healing her wounds and transforming her into a witch. The clip ends with Monalisa’s character, depicted as a witch, watching her from a distance.
