Samsung, Oculus unveil first consumer version of Gear VR; to be priced at $99
Samsung says the new virtual reality headset will be 22 per cent lighter and, at $99, half the price of its previous model.

Oculus announced that it was set to launch a new app bringing Netflix to the Gear VR headset, also revealing that it has a $99 virtual reality headset in the works with Samsung.

Gear VR users will be able to download Netflix to their existing hardware beginning Thursday, and the company is also partnering with Twitch to offer video gaming streams.

Samsung company hopes the changes to the Gear VR, which ships in November, will help push virtual reality into the mainstream. Samsung vice president Peter Koo announced the headset Thursday at a developer's conference for virtual reality technology company Oculus in Los Angeles. Facebook owns Oculus.

Samsung says a new virtual reality headset will be 22 per cent lighter and, at $99, half the price of its previous model. The Gear VR requires users to insert the latest version of a Samsung smartphone into the headset for it to work.

Gamers will be especially happy to hear about the company's plans to launch Minecraft for the Rift. It will be available through the Windows store and the Oculus store and will based on the Windows 10 version of the game.
