Microsoft is killing another legacy product that will not be part of the Windows 11 operating system. We’re talking about WordPad which has been around for over 25 years and played the able role of Word substitute for millions. The new development has been spotted in the recent Windows 11 beta build, where it says, “Starting with this build, the WordPad and People apps will no longer be installed after doing a clean install of the OS.
In a future flight, WordPad will be removed on upgrade. WordPad will not be reinstallable. WordPad is a deprecated Windows feature.” The update clearly states that WordPad will be available on Windows 11 as long as you don’t install the latest beta build. WordPad has always lived a dual life in the Microsoft family.
It was once seen as an alternative to Word and also a better option compared to Notepad. But its jack-of-all- trades nature made it hard for WordPad to truly become the de-facto app for Windows users.
The update will soon become public and that’s when WordPad will be off Microsoft’s roster for the first time since it was released on Windows back in 1995. If you have been relying on WordPad for your work, Microsoft now clearly says that Word and Notepad are your only options. The company seems to have planned for this day in 2023 itself, when the app was marked as deprecated in September last year.
The other big indication was that the WordPad app didn’t get the customary dark mode upgrade that many of the other Microsoft apps have got in recent times. Microsoft is also planning for the future with more AI-enabled features and apps for its users. Copilot is already becoming a big part of its AI-PC era and more changes are expected in the coming months.
