Map mashup reveals the first 100 railway stations to get free Google WiFi
Which are the first 100 railway stations to get free Google WiFi? This Google Map reveals the full list.

The news about Google partnering with the Indian government to provide WiFi Internet services at major railway station had been floating around for long. It was during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Silicon Valley that a formal announcement was made. Though Google has shared some details about the project - that it will begin with 100 railway stations initially before expanding to 400 railway stations around the country - eager Indian railway commuters are waiting for further details.

Google is partnering with Indian Railways and RailTel, which provides Internet services as RailWire via its fibre network along many of India's railway lines, for the project. While it has been reported that the service, that will be free to begin with, would begin with Mumbai Central. It is still unclear about which all stations will the service would be made available in.

Google has only posted an outline map showing the first 100 stations that will have high-speed Wi-Fi by the end of 2016. The map, however, only shows location pins that don't name the stations.

The map that Google posted

Assuming that the location pins point to the actual places on the map, we have plotted the locations from the map posted by Google in its blog post on to a detailed map of India sourced from Google Maps. In the resultant map mashup the list of stations becomes more apparent (We could have also tried to access the full list in text from sources, but then that isn't as much fun :)

While not all locations are evident from this superimposition (because of deviations in scaling and/or plotting), below is a partial list of the 100 railway stations to get free Google WiFi Internet connectivity (If you can identify more locations, or have corrections to suggest, please add them in the comments).
