Apple recently unveiled iOS 18, the latest major software update for the iPhone, at their WWDC event. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, showcased several enhancements coming to the operating system. Among the highly anticipated updates is the ability to replace the flashlight and camera buttons on the iPhone’s Lock screen with third-party apps.
Previously, users were restricted to using Apple’s official camera app. However, with the introduction of the LockedCameraCapture framework, users can now launch third-party camera apps directly from the lock screen, akin to the built-in camera functionality, according to MacRumors.
The portal mentioned, “Use the LockedCameraCapture framework to create an extension that allows people to launch your app's camera experience and capture content quickly when the device is locked. This extension makes your camera experience accessible to people from Control Center, the Lock Screen, or the Action button.”
Reportedly, the new feature will be beneficial for iPhone users who prefer using third-party camera apps, which could now become their default apps and can be opened without unlocking the device. Interestingly, the framework also allows adding more apps than just a camera.
Social media applications such as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok or other similar apps can also be added to the control centre. This enables users to quickly capture and upload photos, and videos to their favourite social media platforms directly from the lock screen.
Meanwhile, Craig Federighi in a statement said, “We are thrilled to introduce iOS 18. It is a huge release with incredible features, including new levels of customization and capability, a redesigned Photos app, and powerful ways to stay connected with Messages. There are so many benefits for everyone.
“This release also marks the beginning of a tremendously exciting new era of personal intelligence with Apple Intelligence delivering intuitive, powerful, and instantly useful experiences that will transform the iPhone experience, all with privacy at the core. We can’t wait for users to experience it,” he adds.
Without the framework, apps will continue to function as usual and won’t be accessible when your phone is locked. Although it may seem like a small change, having quick access to your favourite apps with a simple press can make a lot of difference.
