Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday hit back at the Congress party and said the price rise was in double digits during the last two years of the UPA tenure.
Jaitley was replying to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi's jibe at PM Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha over the spiralling prices of essential items and pulses.
"High prices of dal is a concern for the entire nation. The government has taken steps to address this mismatch in production and demand. The government is taking steps to contain inflation as CPI in 2012-13 was double digit and around 9.5 in 2013-14," Jaitley said.
Jaitley said that the seasonal rise in food prices before monsoon is a common issue and thanked the investors and FDI for making India the fastest growing economy.
The minister said that he was hopeful that the production of pulses would rise to 20 million tonnes this fiscal adding that deficit in pulses was only 6 million tonnes this season.
"The government is striving to create a buffer stock of 20 lakh tonnes," the finance minister added.
Earlier, Rahul had slammed Modi over making hollow prices to control price rise and questioned why he did not raise the issue during the celebrations of two years of his government.
"You may make as many "hollow promises" as you want but give a date by when prices of dal will come down," Rahul had asked the Prime Minister.
