Thiruvananthapuram: After days of unprecedented political violence that rocked the state capital, both CPI(M) and BJP in Kerala have promised to take steps to bring peace.
At the end of the peace talks on Tuesday CPI (M) district secretary Anavoor Nagappan said that the party condemns the attacks.
“Both parties will take measures so that such incidents are not repeated. The leadership will be more careful. The district leadership will immediately intervene in case anything happens and make sure that it doesn’t escalate,” Nagappan added.
He added that party leaders should avoid making provocative statements.
BJP district leaders also said that the talks were healthy and all measures will be taken to restore peace. BJP district president A Suresh said, “We have brought it to the notice of the CPI(M) that in Trivandrum some criminals are becoming politicians and politicians are becoming criminals. We said that CPI (M) should understand this and deal with criminals as criminals and politicians as politicians.”
Asked on the action taken against BJP workers involved in Thursday’s violence, Suresh said that they are not satisfied with the police action, as they feel that some of their workers have been arrested under political pressure.
On Thursday night, stones were pelted and vehicles vandalised at the houses and offices of CPI(M) and BJP leaders. Police arrested around 12 people, including CPI(M) and BJP-RSS workers. CPI(M) councillor IP Binu was also arrested. Police said they have also seized two swords from RSS workers.
BJP district leader A Suresh said that some of police action was based on political pressure and they want the police to relook the actions. “If they arrest the right people we have no issues. If we find that any of our workers were involved in the attack, we will discuss it and take appropriate action.”
After CCTV visuals released by the BJP showed their office being attacked by CPI(M) workers, the Left party suspended their councillor IP Binu and a student wing leader.
After the murder of RSS activist Rajesh, CPI(M) had claimed that the party does not have any role in the murder and that the accused hailed from different parties. Police said that it was a case of personal enmity and that local politics led to the murder.
Locals say that they are concerned about such political violence. Satheesh Chandram, a resident, said, “We are extremely worried about these incidents. Now, if it gets a little late at night, our families are worried as we have no idea in which area there is trouble.”
