New Delhi: Union IT and Communication Minister Dayanidhi Maran resigned on Sunday night hours after a high-level committee of the DMK decided to get him removed from the Cabinet.
However, Maran, who is in Udgamandalam and spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh before faxing his resignation to him, rejected the charge that he had betrayed DMK.
News agency PTI quoted Maran as saying that he had not "even thought of betraying Karunanidhi or the party".
"I will not even think on those lines till I am alive. I have been brought up like that by my grandfather Karunanidhi and my father Murasoli Maran", he was quoted as saying.
"Under the circumstances, if removal from the ministership as well as primary membership of the party could bring happiness to the family members of Karunanidhi, I am prepared to face that because I have been brought up by Karunanidhi like that", Maran added.
Sun TV, owned by Dayanidhi's elder brother Kalanidhi Maran, reported that the Union minister has sent his resignation to the Prime Minister.
The DMK's administrative committee adopted a resolution earlier on Sunday urging the Prime Minister to remove Maran from the Cabinet.
The party took the action against Maran for violating party discipline and bringing defame to it in the wake of the severe embarrassment to Chief Minister M Karunanidhi following the exposure of chinks in the party's first family.
The party has also issued a show-cause notice to him, asking him to explain why he should not be expelled from the party.
"As Dayananidhi Maran's recent approach and activities have been violative of party discipline and have brought defame to the party, the administrative committee has decided to urge party President M Karunanidhi and General Secretary E Anbazhagan to take necessary steps to get him removed from the Union Cabinet", PTI said, quoting a resolution adopted at the party meeting.
