Eyeing elections, Maharashtra government to regularise more slums
The Maharashtra government has tabled the Bill to amend the Maharashtra Slums Act in the state assembly.

Mumbai: With an eye on Lok Sabha polls, the Maharashtra government has tabled the Bill to amend the Maharashtra Slums (improvement, clearance and redevelopment) Act in the state assembly on Friday. This Bill, if cleared, will allow for regularisation of slums up to Jan 1, 2000. The bill extends the cut off date from 1995 to 2000.

The government was in a hurry because they have to do this before the election code of conduct comes into force. An estimated 13 lakh slum units will become eligible for free rehabilitation. The government has done this despite the Bombay High Court restraint order that hasn't been overturned.

Friday is last day of session, but it appears that the bill will get passed as no party wants to be seen as opposing it. Slum vote substantial in some Mumbai pockets.
