Expelled AASU Leaders, Former Youth Congress Prez Angkita Dutta Join BJP
The move signifies a significant shift in Assam's political landscape, as influential leaders and grassroots workers realign their loyalties ahead of the upcoming political challenges

Expelled Assam Youth Congress president Angkita Dutta, along with former MLA Bismita Gogoi and numerous former All Assam Student Union (AASU) members, made a significant political move by joining Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (January 28).

The official joining event was held at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati.

The decision to switch allegiance to the BJP was highlighted by the presence of prominent figures such as Bhavesh Kalita, the BJP’s Assam Pradesh president, Pijush Hazarika, an Assam Minister, Jayanta Malla Baruah, MLAs, and other notable personalities from the party.

One of the reasons to switch was Angkita Dutta’s harassment complaint against Indian Youth Congress president Srinivas BV with the Assam police on April 22.

Speaking on the occasion, Angkita Dutta expressed her disillusionment with the Congress party’s ideology, stating, “The ideology of Congress is being completely rooted, it is no longer the party of Mahatma Gandhi’s beliefs, but about branding Rahul Gandhi repeatedly.”

She further emphasized that there is a disconnect between the Congress leadership and grassroots workers, citing a lack of serious consultation and decision-making processes.

“The leaders at the helm are not attentive to the concerns of grassroots workers. After much deliberation, we collectively decided to take a new direction, which led us to join the Bharatiya Janata Party,” Angkita Dutta said.

Another prominent congress leader Bismita Gogoi who joined BJP on Sunday stated that she decided to join BJP because she and other party workers were not satisfied with the party’s leadership.

“The senior party leadership, particularly the decisions of current President APCC Bhupen Bora were not satisfactory. They even made small talk about a lotus flower on my blouse while doing the Nyay yatra. Also, we know that Congress is currently with the INDIA alliance. But we didn’t even see any other leader of any other party during Rahul Gandhi’s Nyay yatra. Only they know what kind of Nyay is this or just a piece of utter drama.”Gogoi added.

Sources informed CNN NEWS 18 that Gogoi might be offered the candidature from the newly formed constituency of Kaziranga.

The move signifies a significant shift in Assam’s political landscape, as influential leaders and grassroots workers realign their loyalties ahead of the upcoming political challenges.

With Angkita Dutta, Bismita Gogoi, and other former AASU leaders joining the BJP, the party aims to strengthen its presence and influence in Assam while offering a new platform for these leaders to contribute to the state’s development.
