New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav received a clean chit from the Election Commission on Wednesday on the question of a mismatch in his declared assets after the EC rejected the objections raised by his Congress rival.
The EC informed Congress candidate Ajay Yadav through the Central poll observers and returning officer that the objections raised by him have been rejected on "relevant grounds".
A cloud of uncertainty had set in over Mulayam Singh Yadav's nominations from the Bharthana Assembly seat in Etawah district after the RO had stopped the scrutiny process of his nomination papers till 1500 hrs on Wednesday following objections by Ajay Yadav.
The Congress nominee had alleged that the CM had "misrepresented" facts about his property in the nomination papers filed from Bharthana.
In the 2004 Lok Sabha election, the CM had estimated his total assets at Rs 1.21 crore in an affidavit filed before the EC, he pointed out. Mulayam had contested the election from the Mainpuri seat.
Recently, in an affidavit filed before the Supreme Court, the SP chief estimated his assets at Rs 30 crore. But in the current affidavit filed with his nomination papers, Mulayam has calculated his assets at Rs 5 crore, he said.
The EC Central Observer has, meanwhile, sent the details to the EC for a final decision. The RO eventually gave a clearance to Mulayam after consulting the EC.
Recently, the apex court had directed the CBI to carry out a preliminary inquiry into the assets of the CM and his kin following a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a Congress worker.
The EC officials on Wednesday scrutinised nominations of 965 candidates for the first phase of Uttar Pradesh poll in 62 Assembly constituencies spread over 13 districts. Polling in these constituencies is slated to be held on April 7.
