New Delhi: The Congress party has received another setback ahead of next week's Delhi Municipal elections – Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has virtually refused to join the campaign as a result of simmering differences within the state unit.
Her second term as Chief Minister has been marked by growing differences between her and state party President Ram Babu Sharma.
With barely a few days to go before the crucial elections, Dikshit has chosen to virtually boycott her party campaign.
“Whenever I am required I am helping out,” Dikshit said.
But sources within the Congress reveal that Dikshit is upset that she has not been consulted on the choice of candidates.
Also, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Commitee has not included her in any programme to campaign for the party. Except for two party meetings and her appearance at the release of the Congress manifesto, the Chief Minster is missing in action.
But on record, the party denies the sharp differences. “We are soldiers of the Congress party and Sonia Gandhi. We are all working for that,” Ram Babu Sharma said.
With the sealing and demolition drive haunting the Congress candidates, this infighting is certainly not helping the party's prospects in the MCD elections.
Just a month ago, it was another Congress Chief Minister ND Tiwari who refused to campaign for the party in the Uttarakhand state elections.
Now with Dikshit staying away from the municipal elections, it’s time for the party managers to control this infighting which is plaguing state party units.
